Michigan City Area Schools
Michigan City Area Schools currently keeps students in elementary school longer than many Indiana districts. Most elementary campuses serve preschool or kindergarten through sixth grade. Barker and Krueger Middle Schools receive grades seven and eight, and Michigan City High School is the shared grade 9–12 destination. The present physical route is PreK/K–6→7–8→9–12.
Great Lakes Virtual Academy provides online instruction, while Pathways and related programs support students through alternative schedules, credit recovery, and smaller learning arrangements. LaPorte County Career and Technical Education serves juniors and seniors from seven area high schools at two locations; its detailed program directory currently lists fifteen named programs.
A board-approved facilities plan targets fall 2029 for major reconfiguration, including a grades 5–8 role for the Krueger site and other building changes. Those assignments belong to the later facilities phase. Students enrolling in 2026–27 still use the K–6 elementary and 7–8 middle-school structure.
